Police in Gaoan, China, have raided underground slaughter houses and detained 12 people for allegedly selling unfit meat.

According to the Chinese newspaper “South China Morning Post” eight officials have also been sacked. The sale of meat from diseased pigs has apparently been going on for the last decade.

The meat was sold in Guangdong, Hunan, Chongqing, Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu and Shandong, according to a report on state television. It was estimated that 70,000 animals could have been sold.
