B vitamins to see well into old age

Carrots have some competition. A paper published in this months the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN) looked into the role of vitamin B-12 and folic acid in developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

They found that people with a deficiency of Vitamin B12 or Folic acid had increased risks of developing AMD. They also looked at levels of serum total homocysteine (tHcy), that can become elevated due to deficiencies in B vitamins, and found people with higher tHcy had an increased risk of developing AMD. Taking Vitamin B12 supplements lowered the chance of developing AMD.

The paper is available from the AJCN website.
