The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have published a guidance document with the aim of harmonising the Total Diet Study (TDS) approach. TDSs are a complementary approach to monitoring and surveillance programs. They are designed to allow calculation of population dietary exposure, as opposed to identifying individual contaminated food items.

Harmonisation of the TDS approach would allow for greater comparability between individual studies improving the efficiency and accuracy of dietary exposure assessments of chemical substances.
