Omega 3 good, omega 6..that’s a different story

We all know by now that omega oils are meant to be good for us. These are found in fish and in plants. But whereas omega 3 have been shown to have health benefits the same should not be said for omega 6. That is according to a publication in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) earlier this month.

The authors are concerned about a health claim that was approved back in 2009 in Canada that states that these oils can lead to „a reduced risk of heart disease by lowering blood cholesterol levels“. They draw attention to a paper published earlier this year in which people on a diet supplemented with omega 6 oils actually had an increased risk of developing heart disease.

The health claim for omega 3 oils still seems valid.

The publication is available for purchase from the CMAJ website.

A paper published on the subject of dietary linoleic acid (omega 6) is available from the British Medical Journal (BMJ) website.
