Levels of Bisphenol A (BPA) a common compound used in lining of tin cans and in bottles, were found to be almost 19 times higher in individuals who ate tinned soup compared to freshly prepared soup.
The safety of BPA is an on going debate, with Canada and Europe recently banning it from baby food bottles over concern it could affect development and immune response. Other experts have dismissed these claims saying the exposure is in such small doses and broken down so quickly, they do not see how it can cause problems.
The authors of the research letter, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association say this research should be of concern for people who regularly eat canned food or drink more than one canned drink a day.
