The Food Standards Agency has been notified by the Health Protection Agency about an outbreak of Salmonella Newport that has infected 30 people in the UK. Watermelon has been identified as a possible vector but it is too early to say with confidence. One person who was infected has died but was understood to have had underlying health complications.
Further information will be disseminated as it comes to light. In the meantime, people are advised to wash fruit and vegetables thoroughly to reduce the risk of possible infection.
