Are you worried about the environmental cost of eating meat but can’t quite bring yourself to go vegetarian? Well, you could significantly reduce the impact by eating mealworms…yummy.
Back in August we reported on the BBC’s Costing the Earth Story “Bug Mac and Flies” in which Tom Heap tried among other things, bread and cakes containing ground up mealworms at the University of Wageningen, Netherlands. Now these researchers have published a paper in the journal PLOS ONE showing that production of 1kg of edible protein from mealworms requires less land, produces less greenhouse gases and require similar amounts of energy compared to producing 1kg of protein from milk, chicken, pork or beef.
The publication is available on the PLOS ONE website
