Bad Bean Sprouts

111 people across 12 states in the US have become infected with Salmonella after consuming bean sprouts.

That was the startling news reported on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website a few days ago. Apparently 26% of the people infected have been hospitalised but so far no deaths have been reported.

Bean sprouts from Wonton Foods, Inc. have been implicated as the probable source of the outbreak and the company are cooperating with state and federal public health and agriculture officials.

The CDC recommend that children, pregnant women and people with comprised immune systems should avoid eating raw sprouted seeds. Cooking them thoroughly should limit the chance of food poisoning as it kills the bacteria.
