Estonia EU audit on salmonella: OK, but lack of clear legal rules may create confusion

The report describes the outcome of an audit carried out by the Food and Veterinary Office in Estonia, from 30 August to 6 September 2011, in order to control Salmonella for various poultry populations.

The report concludes that the implementation of the Salmonella National Control Programs is overall satisfactory for breeders and broilers. Salmonella prevalence is very low. The reliability of sampling results is ensured by the satisfactory state of laboratories involved in these programs.

However the efficiency of the control system for laying hens is weakened to some extent by shortcomings detected in the implementation of the control program for laying hens and in confirmatory sampling. The lack of clear legal rules creates confusion in some instances.
