Salt: Too much in our children’s food

Another story from the AHA conference for you. We already reported that 75% of people worldwide consume too much sodium. Now it seems that nearly 75% of commercially pre-packed meals and savoury snacks intended for 1-3 year olds are high in sodium.

The researchers looked into 1,115 products for babies and toddlers in the US and found that the meals for toddlers had significantly higher levels of sodium than those for babies. That in itself is not surprising, however, some of these products contained a whopping 630 mg of sodium per serving.

The researchers are concerned that introducing toddlers to such high levels of salt will give them a taste for it that can lead to high blood pressure later in life.
