Current EU swine evaluations inadequate

EFSA report into modernisation of meat inspection found that ante and post mortem inspections of swine are not always conducted according to regulations and are inadequate for certain food borne hazards.

Salmonella spp., Yersinia enterocolitica, Toxoplasma gondii and Trichinella spp., uncommon in the majority of the EU, do occur in some states and can be difficult to detect with current processes. The study also found testing for medical residues, faecal contamination, heavy metals, hormones and toxins to be insufficient.
