A new cultivar of “super” broccoli has been produced in the UK by the John Innes Centre and the Institute of Food Research that contains 2-3 times the amount of the phytonutrient glucoraphanin compared to other varieties.

The vegetable, known commercially as Beneforté, is the product of 14 years of traditional (non GM) cross breeding of broccoli with a wild bitter relative from Sicily. Beneforté has been available in selected stores in the US for the last year and goes on sale in the UK this month in Marks and Spenser’s.
