Sugar, fertility’s going down

Mice whose diet was supplemented with a small amount of glucose and fructose (to mimic high fructose corn syrup) lived shorter lives, had reduced fertility and were less fit than a control group.

That was the findings of a paper published in Nature Communications yesterday. The researchers were interested in what effect a small amount of added sugar would have, as too many publications are criticised for being based on adding unrealistically high levels of sugar to the diet.

The female mice had a 2 fold increase in mortality while the males produced 25% less offspring and controlled 26% less territories. The mice also had higher levels of cholesterol and took longer to clear glucose from the blood.

A thought provoking read indeed. Click here to check it out.
