Still too salty

9 out of 10 Americans are still consuming too much salt. That is the message from this month’s CDC Vital Signs report. The recommended daily allowance of sodium is 2,300mg but the average American consumes 3,300mg per day.

Too much sodium raises blood pressure which can increase the risk of strokes and heart disease. People can reduce their sodium intake by increasing the amount of fresh and frozen vegetables (without sauce) in their diet and by choosing products that have lower amounts of sodium. Dr Frieden, the CDC director, says he is encouraged that several food manufactures, such as Kraft Food and Leprino Food are reducing the level of sodium in their products.
