Lamb curry surprise! It probably contains chicken or beef

News this week from the Food Standards Agency, UK, that further tests are being ordered on takeaways across the UK after widespread lamb substitution for cheaper meats such as beef and chicken were uncovered.

The results are in from the testing period of July to December last year and the results make for some uncomfortable reading. Nearly one third of the 145 samples taken contained meat other than lamb, 25 of which were only beef.

According to the press release on the FSA website the consumer magazine Which has also got in on the action and carried out their own meat testing. They collected 30 lamb kebab and 30 lamb curry dishes and found that 24 of them were adulterated with chicken or beef.

The current fine for food mislabeling is £5000, but the Chief Operating Officer at the FSA, Andrew Rhodes says that the message is clearly not getting through to some businesses.
