Chinese authorities turn up the heat on Gutter oil producers

Last year, 134 people were arrested in east China’s Shandong province for producing or selling waste food oil as cooking oil. Known as Gutter oil, the name is well deserved as some of the oil is acquired by dredging the drains behind restaurants.

China’s food safety authority started a crack down in August last year and have been researching new ways to detect the oil, a task made difficult by the sophisticated methods used by the profiteers. They have also said they will consider the death penalty in serious enough cases.
