A nutty diet to help you live longer?

..and we are not talking about starving yourself, no, this really is about increasing the amount of nuts you eat to reduce your risk of dying of cardiovascular disease and eating walnuts to lower the risk of certain cancers.

In a research paper published in the journal BMC medicine, researchers studied three groups of people, one group eating a diet supplemented with nuts, one supplemented with olive oil (Mediterranean diet)  and the control group. They found that the nut consumers had an overall reduced risk of mortality during the trial and that eating walnuts in particular reduced your chance of certain cancers.

So how much should you eat? For an overall protective effect the research suggests at least 1 to 3 servings per week which is approx. between 4 – 12g per day. The protective effects against cancer were observed with more than 3 servings per week.
