Antioxidants keep the eye sight clear

Yes, those lovely little bundles of health promoting substances found in fruit have another feather to add to their cap, they can reduce your chances of developing cataracts. So say a group of Swedish researchers whose paper was published in the journal JAMA Ophthalmol (study of the eye) on boxing day.

The researchers looked into the diet of 30,607 Swedish women aged between 49 and 83 and noted the number of age related cataracts that developed within an average time span of 7.7 years.

They found that there was an inverse relationship between development of age related cataracts and the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of the food in their diet. In other words, eating food that was high in antioxidants seemed to reduce the risk of cataracts.

Yet another reason to make sure you get your 5 a day.
