Too much fish oil bad for the prostate?

salmon omega capsule

Unsettling news published yesterday online in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI). Apparently men with high omega 3 oil levels in their blood had a significantly higher incidence of high grade (aggressive) and low grade (the most treatable) forms of prostate cancer.

This is worrying as many people routinely take omega 3 oil supplements daily believing it to be beneficial for health. Interestingly, people with higher levels of linoleic acid (an omega 6 oil found in, for example, sunflower oil) had a lower incidence of prostate cancer.

Experts have reacted to the paper by saying they would not recommend people changing their habits based solely on this paper. There have been many publications on the matter and this paper does not resolve the issue.

Check out the paper on the JNCI website or for a lighter read why not check out the article in the English newspaper The Telegraph.
